Stranger Things season 4 spoiled by Monopoly game; Creators Angry With Netflix – The Hollywood Reporter

As if Netflix didn’t have enough to worry about lately: An effort to promote stranger things season four was turned upside down.

Footage has leaked online from an official Monopoly game link linked to the long-awaited new season of the retro sci-fi hit.

Images of the game’s maps – which began shooting last month – spoil major plot points in the new episodes. (The Hollywood Reporter won’t reveal them here.)

Netflix was not happy about the incident. But they weren’t as upset as the show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers, who sources say weren’t consulted about the game. Matt and Ross Duffer have long enjoyed maintaining the secrecy of the story and reportedly had a “total meltdown” over the incident.

A Reddit thread devoted to the leak claimed that the game was purchased from “a nationally recognized retailer and purchased fairly by a consumer. Nobody stole it; no one leaked a sample. These purchase details are not confirmed, however. Retailers are currently advertising stranger things Monopoly boards are tied to past seasons, although a few purported copies of the season four version are advertised on eBay.

A source close to the streamer’s tentpole series said that while its producers have a lot of the involvement and endorsements of the vast majority of show promotions and consumer products, the scale and extent of the stranger things The franchise’s world is so incomparable to any other Netflix show that the Monopoly game had to accidentally pass.

“Lessons have been learned and, I expect there will be more cohesion in season five,” the source noted.

This isn’t the first time a major entertainment brand has been spoiled with a tetherable toy. star wars titles have been spoiled many times over the years (like a Rey action figure with a lightsaber released before the force awakens opened, revealing the character to be a potential Jedi). The Mandalorian Showrunner Jon Favreau was so concerned about toy spoilers that he refused to allow any manufacturer to obtain Baby Yoda’s design before the show premiered in 2019, resulting in the lucrative toy line for the breakout character wasn’t available to consumers until several months after the Disney+ series launched.

Netflix recently announced that stranger thingsThe fifth season will be his last. The Duffers have also strongly hinted that stranger things could get a sequel or spin-off series beyond the show’s current story and cast.

Here is the official description for Season 4: “It has been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Grappling with the consequences, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made it any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a horrifying new supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, could finally bring an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.

The new season is divided into two parts. Season four “Volume 1” will debut on May 27 (three years after season three aired). While the second half of the fourth season, “Volume 2”, will debut on July 1.
