49ers news: George Kittle says Trey Lance took big steps forward during OTAs

George Kittle joined Pat McAfee’s podcast on Friday and had positive words for Trey Lance, which seems rare these days. Kittle also acknowledged that it was embarrassing that Jimmy Garoppolo remained on the roster as the team tried to move on to Lance:

“Some would say it’s definitely awkward. You trade three first-round picks for a quarterback, there’s writing on the wall. That’s the way it is. That’s the NFL’s business. Everything the world is trying to bring in younger, better, cheaper players, and that’s how the league works, so there’s an awkwardness to that I guess.

“But at the end of the day, we are all here on the same team. We’re trying to win a Super Bowl. The luck we have here at the Niners is that I feel like we have a fantastic culture of guys who just want to get better every day, and we love everyone in the locker room.

Garoppolo is loved in the dressing room. It’s a saving grace to keep it. If he was off-putting about the situation last year, which Jimmy was the opposite of, I could see that was awkward. Fortunately, that was not the case.

Kittle explained how Jimmy helped Trey and how Lance took steps forward this offseason:

So I thought Trey had taken a bunch of steps forward. And for Trey to be a really good quarterback in the NFL, he needs reps. And so, once this kid gets a lot of reps, watch out because some of the things I’ve seen him do in practice are pretty mind-blowing, so I’m expecting that. I think it’s steadily improved, but you can see – like, Jimmy G is a professional through and through.

Jimmy G takes notes at every meeting. He asks questions at every meeting. It’s in his books. And I think once Trey saw that, he was like, “Oh, I gotta do all of that and more.”

And it’s also too much, we have a great quarterback room. We have Nate Sudfeld in there… He’s great for Trey too, because he’s a people person. He helps Trey with the offense, and he’s done a great job helping him all year too. Trey has therefore, in my opinion, made great strides forward. If you compare him to last year’s OTAs, I think they’re two different players, and that’s just exciting to see.

Kittle’s mention of Sudfeld should not go unnoticed. He possesses be awesome for Lance.

Lance is constantly improving is a big deal. We usually see the biggest jumps from Year 1 to Year 2. He hasn’t played enough to make that jump in Lance’s case, so we’ll see how that goes.

Kittle also made a good point about the team having to be pretty good around him and picking up Lance for those growing pains we talked about. You could feel Kittle’s excitement, which is fun. He knows Trey needs to play to improve.

The schedule is settling in nicely for the 49ers. Two opponents with low expectations heading into the season, then that’s followed by two opponents who should make the playoffs. So we’ll find out how much Lance has improved in the first month of the season.
