Kylian Mbappe decision: PSG superstar snubs Real Madrid, to stay with Paris Saint-Germain

Kylian Mbappé has made his decision. Arguably the best young talent in all of world football is staying with Paris Saint-Germain instead of joining UEFA Champions League runners-up Real Madrid. PSG have announced their contract extension until 2025 ahead of the team’s final game of the Ligue 1 campaign on Saturday against FC Metz. In a short video, Mbappe says ‘it’s Paris’ as he stands high and overlooks the Parc des Princes pitch. The France international signed a three-year contract with Les Parisiens earlier on Saturday.

The 23-year-old took to the pitch on Saturday brandishing a shirt with 2025 on the back – the year his new contract will run until and said: “I’m very happy to stay in Paris – my city”, for much to the delight of fans. “I always said that Paris was my home.”

Mbappe had been the subject of intense speculation since last summer when a move to Real failed to materialise, and the AS Monaco youth academy graduate had to see out the remaining 12 months of his contract before becoming a free agent this summer. Sources from CBS Sports have reported that PSG’s offer is slightly lower than Real’s in just about every aspect, but the player has decided to stay in Paris given the personal and professional challenge it poses.

“I would like to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at PSG, and of course I am delighted with that,” Mbappe said in an official statement. “I am convinced that here I can continue to grow in a club that offers everything it takes to perform at the highest level. I am also delighted to continue playing in France, the country where I was born, where I grew up and where I made my name.”

The French superstar nearly led the Ligue 1 winners past Real in this season’s Champions League round of 16 only for Mauricio Pochettino’s men to dump him at Santiago Bernabeu, which seemed to settle the issue of the Champions League. Mbappe’s future in favor of Los Blancos.

The La Liga champions have since reached the final and will now face Liverpool at the Stade de France in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis next weekend. Mbappe was crowned Ligue 1 Player of the Year for the third time in a row last weekend and has just completed a 36-goal campaign after scoring 42 times last campaign and scoring at least 30 in each of his four last seasons at PSG.

The news of Mbappe’s stay is absolutely huge for PSG, who are aiming to claim European glory in the near future, having gone all out last summer with the signing of Lionel Messi. Keeping Mbappe allows the club to continue fielding him alongside Messi and Neymar in attack – assuming neither moves this summer.

PSG ended the Ligue 1 season at home to FC Metz on Saturday with a 5-0 thrashing that saw Mbappe score three times. Early reports suggest that PSG’s first target is Zinedine Zidane to replace Pochettino as head coach, Luis Campos as sporting director and Ousmane Dembele in what is expected to be a summer of major changes in the French capital.

The Ligue 1 champions are keeping their promises to Mbappe to rebuild their sporting project with Pochettino and sporting director Leonardo briefed on PSG’s intentions soon after Metz win.
