Johnny Depp called his ex-wife’s sexual and physical abuse accusations ‘crazy’ on Wednesday as he returned to the witness box in his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard.
“Ridiculous, humiliating, ridiculous, painful, savage, incredibly brutal, cruel and all wrong,” Depp said when asked about her reaction to hearing Heard’s allegations when she testified earlier in the trial.
Depp was testifying as a rebuttal witness on Wednesday — he and Heard each testified at length earlier in the trial.
He gave specific responses to some of the particular allegations made by Heard as well as his sister, Whitney Henriquez, who provided some of Heard’s strongest testimony.
He concluded the questioning by his lawyers with a definitive denial of the allegations.
“I have never in my life committed sexual assault, physical abuse, all these outlandish, outrageous stories of me doing these things,” he said. “And live with it for six years, and wait until you can get the truth out.”
He said that “no matter what happens, I got here and spoke the truth and talked about what I’ve been carrying on my back, reluctantly, for six years.”
When cross-examining Depp, Heard’s lawyers took aim at that claim, asking the actor about his earlier lawsuit against Britain’s Sun newspaper, which called him a “wife beater.” Depp lost that libel case.
Heard’s attorney, J. Benjamin Rottenborn, also read text messages between Depp and his assistant in which he used vulgar terms to refer to a woman’s sexual organs and read “I NEED. I WANT. I TAKE “. Depp called the idea he wrote if he wanted to be sexually with a woman she was rightly his, “ridiculous.”
“You can post whatever you want, I never said those words. There’s not enough pride in me,” he told Heard’s lawyer, suggesting the text had been tampered with or that someone could have commandeered his phone. “It’s quite grotesque.”
Depp is suing Heard in Fairfax County Circuit Court over a December 2018 op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic violence.” His lawyers say he was defamed by the article even though he never mentioned his name.
Depp hashe once punched Heard and said she was the aggressor in the relationship. heard has more than a dozen separate instances of physical abuse she says she suffered at the hands of Depp.
Depp also disputed a claim by Heard that Depp had nothing to do with getting a role in the superhero blockbuster “Aquaman.” When Heard testified, she was clearly offended by a question from Depp’s lawyers insinuating that Depp got her the part.
Depp, however, said that after auditioning for the role, Heard spoke to the studio on his behalf. He was not allowed to discuss details of his conversations when Heard’s lawyers objected, but said “in the end she got the job, so I hope I guess I limited their concerns to some extent.”
On cross-examination, however, jurors saw a text message sent after Heard filed for divorce in which Depp told his sister, “I want her replaced in this WB (Warner Bros.) movie.” .
Yet when Heard’s attorney asked Depp if he tried to get Heard fired from “Aquaman,” he denied it. He said instead that he just felt obligated to let the studio know “it was going to end up being ugly” if they kept Heard in the movie.
Also on Wednesday, model Kate Moss, a former girlfriend of Depp, denied ever being pushed or assaulted by Depp during their relationship.
Moss also testified as a rebuttal witness. Heard, in his testimony, referenced Moss and a rumor that Depp pushed Moss down a flight of stairs when they were out together.
Moss, in testimony provided by video link, said Depp had never assaulted her. She said she once slipped down a flight of stairs after a rainstorm at a Jamaican resort and Depp came to her aid.
She testified for less than 5 minutes and was not cross-examined.
Depp also addressed the accusation in his testimony, saying it happened exactly as Moss said. He said he told Heard the Moss story years ago and “Ms. Heard took the story and turned it into a very ugly incident, all in her head.”
