Cultural critics have spent a lot of time getting poetic about how the age of streaming – and Netflix in particular – devalues creative works by turning them into mere “content” dumped mindlessly into a big bag of streaming trash. and meanwhile viewers (and a sneaky algorithm) do the rest. And while I certainly agree, it’s also undeniably a “me” problem.

For example, I was fully aware of the Netflix superhero series the Umbrella Academy for years, long before the first season started on the streamer. I’ve read the original graphic novels, followed its production, applauded its casting, and anticipated seeing its hybrid of comedy, family drama, and comic book tropes come to life. Yet do I really look at one of those series about the misadventures of a group of super-powered siblings and a talking primate? No. No, I didn’t. And now I’m almost three seasons late!

It’s inconceivable to me that I haven’t watched a show with such a fun trailer, let alone one that can be accurately described as “The Royal Tenenbaums meets The Fantastic Four.” And yet. There is so much a lot content out there these days, and when it all falls into one bingeable chunk, the pressure to sit down and consume it can be too much. At least for me. Maybe I’ll catch up by the time season three comes out on June 22? (Nope.)

Other than that, it’s been a sleepy month on Netflix. There’s a new Adam Sandler comedy, Hustle (June 8), in which he plays a sports talent scout trying to recruit a Spanish phenomenon; in the sitcom God’s Favorite Idiot (June 15), starring Melissa McCarthys opposite her husband Ben Falcone, who plays a loser recruited by the Almighty to fight evil. And then there are the comedy specials – oh-so many comedy specials, like Amy Schumer (June 11), Pete Davidson (June 13), Bill Burr (June 6), and more. Plus, a new behind-the-scenes talk show focused on David Letterman’s comedy (June 7) and dirty daddy, a tribute to the late great Bob Saget (June 10). I’m sure they don’t produce all these specials just because they are cheapouriree.

Here’s everything else coming in and out of Netflix in June 2022.
