The Philadelphia Phillies have fired director Joe Girardi after a 22-29 start to the 2022 MLB season.

Philadelphia has lost seven of its last nine games and is 12 games behind the first-place New York Mets in the NL East. Phillies coach Rob Thomson has been named interim manager for the remainder of the season.

“It’s been a frustrating season for us so far as we feel our club hasn’t lived up to its abilities,” the Phillies chairman said. Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. “While we all share responsibility for our shortcomings, I felt a change was needed and that a new voice at the clubhouse would give us the best chance of turning things around.”

The Phillies have the fourth Major League Baseball’s highest payroll over $233 million.
