Morbius is back in theaters — even though no one asks — and its unpopularity is only getting more evident. The film earned just $85,000 on Friday after making its return to more than 1,000 theaters, bringing its domestic tally to $73.6 million (via Forbes).
Morbius was originally released on April 1 and wasn’t the most well-received. In The edgeof the film’s review, our television and film journalist, Charles Pulliam-Moore, says MorbiusThe pacing, plot, and performance of its lead actors seem “ill-conceived” and “challenges Sony’s grand plan to build an entire cinematic universe on the back of Spider-Man.”
Sony probably re-released the film in the hopes that renewed interest in the “it’s morbin hour” meme would somehow trigger a second, larger wave of people who would like to s sit across the Spider Man spin off. But it turns out that a meme’s popularity isn’t directly tied to genuine interest – who would have guessed?
In an even grumpier move, Jared Leto – the star of Morbius – just had to get into the meme, post a video on Twitter which shows him reading a fake script titled Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’s time. Here’s hoping Sony is trolling us all and not planning on Dr. Morbius making an appearance in the next one. Spider Man with its hip new tagline, or worse, get a sequel.
