2022 Belmont Stakes Competitors, Odds, Post-Draw, Picks, Best Predictions: Legendary Expert Fades We the People

In 2007, Curlin lost by a head in the Belmont Stakes to Rags to Riches, who became the first filly in 102 years to win The Third Jewel of the Triple Crown. Fifteen years later, a Curlin dam will be looking to finish a place better than her sire in the 2022 Belmont Stakes. This filly, Nest, will be looking to join Rags to Riches as the fourth female horse to win The Run for the Carnations. The 2022 Belmont Stakes will be Nest’s first run against the boys and she was a runner-up at the Kentucky Oaks in her last outing. The 154th edition of the Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday at 6:44 p.m. ET, departure time from Belmont Park. Nest drew in third position and has odds of 8-1. The favorites for the latest 2022 Belmont Stakes odds are We the People (2-1), Mo Donegal (5-2) and Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (7-2). Before you make any picks for the 2022 Belmont Stakes, you need to see what legendary handicapper Hammerin’ Hank Goldberg has to say.

A former horse racing analyst for ESPN and NBC, Goldberg became a legendary handicapper by going straight to the source. In 2004, he dined before the Belmont Stakes with trainer Nick Zito at a pizzeria in Queens. The dinner led to Goldberg playing Zito’s monster 36-1 long shot Birdstone to win and on top of his exacta, trifecta and superfecta bets. When Birdstone shocked the world, Goldberg took home $24,000.

His success continued at SportsLine. In the San Felipe Stakes in March 2020, Hammer dealt a $20 exacta that paid 9-1. In the 2020 Belmont Stakes, Goldberg was all over Tiz the Law, who took a convincing victory in the first Triple Crown race of the year. Hammer also won the exacta in the Blue Grass Stakes, Haskell Stakes and Pacific Classic that year.

Last year he hit the exacta Essential Quality-Hot Rod Charlie in the Belmont Stakes. And three weeks ago he won the Early Voting-Epicentre exacta in the Preakness Stakes. Anyone who followed him in those races is top.

Now he has turned his attention to the 2022 Belmont Stakes field, made his picks and built his bets. Head over to SportsLine to see them.

Belmont Stakes 2022 Expert Predictions

One surprise: Goldberg is completely fading on We the People, despite being the morning favorite, at 2-1. We the People has only one victory in the Graduated Stakes and it came at Tier III Peter Pan Stakes last month. However, this race lacked the strongest of fields. In fact, there was only one other horse that will race in any of the Triple Crown races this year. And this horse — Golden Glider — is the Belmont’s biggest long shot.

Hammer also notes that the Peter Pan had a sealed track, which helped We the People given its pioneering racing style. He is unlikely to see those track conditions again at the Belmont, negating his greatest strength. Goldberg fades the favorite and doesn’t even have We the People finishing in the money.

“I don’t think he’s as good as his win at Peter Pan suggests,” Goldberg told SportsLine. “This race was on a sealed, sloppy track, and those tracks very often help the horses win from the gate to the wire, which he did.”

How to make picks for the 2022 Belmont Stakes

Hammer’s top pick is a long shot that is “great value” and “fits in perfectly” with his jockey. Goldberg includes this horse in his 2022 Belmont Stakes bets, and so should you. He shares horses to support only at SportsLine.
