Craig Mazin’s adaptation of the video game blockbuster The last of us is now officially on the verge of proving its eventual existence, as HBO released the first image from the series today at Summer Game Fest. said photo show stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the game’s iconic main characters, Joel and Ellie.

And, yes, fair enough: the two actors look like, at the very least, the vibe characters from the game, especially Pascal, who is used to all this”keep a special child safe while the whole universe is seemingly ready to kill him” game, and who looks quite tired of the world like the hard-living Joel. (Ramsey, meanwhile, does not see much like the games version of Ellie, but this preview of annoyed disdain on his face is certainly consistent with the slow thawing relationship between the two survivors.)

The images from the series were presented as part of the beefy The last of us track at today’s Summer Game Fest. In addition to showing the snapshot of former colleagues game of thrones stars Pascal and Ramsey, the event also saw the game series Neil Druckmann (who writes and directs an episode of the HBO show, which is directed by Chernobyl‘s Mazin) announce that the games’ voice acting and motion capture stars, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, will also appear on the show in some form.

The last of us takes place in a version of America in which a fungal infection has turned large percentages of the human population into creatures that are zombies in name. The games center on Joel, a hardened survivor well versed in violence, and Ellie, the teenage girl he’s tasked with transporting across the ravaged United States. The games have been both critical and commercial darlings; Word of a PlayStation 5 remake of the original game leaked online earlier today.

The The last of us The TV show is expected to finish filming its first season this month; the show will debut on HBO in 2023.
