Sometimes I wonder why I feel like I live in two different countries within the same common borders. And then I watch part of the Tucker Carlson show on Fox News, and the utterly absurd starts to make a bit of sense.
Carlson, whose show aired for a full hour without commercial breaks on Thursday night so its viewers were less likely to change channels to one of the many other networks televising the committee’s first public hearing on Jan. 6, attacked Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera last night for fining defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.
Mediate.com has the clip. I decided to hold my nose and transcribe it.
“Jack Del Rio is a football coach, he’s the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, formerly known as the Redskins until for some reason that was unacceptable,” Carlson said. “So a few days ago, Del Rio pointed out that no one seems to be talking about the BLM riots anymore. Instead, they pretend to care about January 6th. Well, he got attacked for that, because that you’re not allowed to love telling the truth on any level. So he came back and said he stood by his comments. Here’s what he said.
The show then aired a short clip from Del Rio’s press conference on Wednesday. It starts with Del Rio saying he speaks with respect. It ends with Del Rio saying, “What did I ask? A simple question. Why don’t we examine these things?
Curiously (or not), the clip ended before the point where Del Rio dismisses the January 6 insurrection as “dust on Capitol Hill.”
“Oh, he thought he had the right to speak respectfully in the land of the free,” Carlson continued. “But it turns out not. Just hours ago, the Washington Commanders coach, a fascist moron named Ron Rivera, announced that Jack Del Rio was barred from speaking and was being fined $100,000. $ for doing it. Rivera began by claiming that, in quotes, “lives were lost on January 6th,” which is a lie.
“Then he went on to quote, ‘Our organization will not tolerate any equivalence between those who sought justice in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the actions of those on January 6 who sought to overthrow our government. If you can think of a line more filled with dishonesty and propaganda than that, text us and tell us what it is, because we can’t. I mean, it’s downright Maoist. Basically what he’s saying is, ‘Shut up. You are no longer authorized to speak. If you disagree with orthodoxy, you will be punished. It’s an NFL team. And it happens everywhere. »
To sum up, Carlson’s staff omitted any reference to Del Rio calling the insurrection (or, as one of Carlson’s Thursday night guests suggested, an FBI plot to entrap Donald Trump supporters) a ” dust”. Additionally, Carlson called a two-time respected NFL Coach of the Year a “fascist moron.” Finally, Carlson said it was a lie to claim that lives were lost on January 6.
And Carlson works for Fox News. Sister company to a major NFL broadcast partner. And yet the NFL, which frankly has no qualms complaining about me to NBC whenever it sees fit, never says a word about Carlson.
Maybe the NFL is privately complaining about Carlson. If so, it is brazenly ignored. As evidenced by last night’s comments about Ron Rivera and the COs.
We will be asking the league and the team for comment in response to Carlson’s attack on Ron Rivera. Chances are neither of them has anything to say. And that’s a shame. At a time when there aren’t enough people speaking the truth, those who have committed themselves to it must be prepared to stand up and be counted.
