‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Opener Devours ‘Top Gun 2’ – The Hollywood Reporter

The dinosaurs are back.

Jurassic World Dominion devoured an estimated $143.4 million from 4,676 theaters when it opened domestically after hitting a Friday gross of $59.6 million. Globally, the tentpole of the summer ended Sunday with a worldwide total of $389 million as the box office rally continued to gain momentum.

The latest installment in Universal and Amblin’s jurassic world the trilogy easily won the weekend as an audience sensation Top Gun: Maverick fell to No. 2 on its third outing. Top Gun 2 continues to outperform, however, as it nears the $400 million mark in the domestic market. The Paramount and Skydance pic earned an additional $50 million for a domestic total of $393.3 million.

jurassic world Domination came just behind 2018 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($148 million) and notably behind 2015 jurassic world ($208.8 million), but has one of the biggest openings of the pandemic era.

Critics raved about the film, but audiences disagreed, giving it an A-CinemaScore and solid releases on PostTrak. Jurassic World Dominion currently has a score of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest of any title in the iconic dino series.

An advantage is that Domination removes large format Imax and premium screens from Top Gun: Maverick. Another plus: actors Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and BD Wong are reuniting for the first time since starring in director Steven Spielberg’s first film. jurassic park (1993).

And a third: young people under 17 came out in force (23%), pointing to family appeal. The film biased towards men (56%), while almost half of ticket buyers (46%) were between 18 and 34 years old, according to PostTrak. The more expensive premium large-format and Imax screens accounted for 35% of gross product.

This time around, dinosaurs are living – and hunting – alongside humans all over the world. Jurassic World Dominion features never-before-seen dinosaurs and new visual effects.

Overseas, the film began opening in a slew of additional markets this week for a foreign total of $245 million (it first launched last weekend in select territories).

Domination is one of the few Hollywood tentpoles to have a release date in China, where it opened to a promising $52.2 million. While it’s behind fallen kingdom several years ago ($111 million), Domination will easily rank as the biggest Hollywood opening in China this year, surpassing The BatmanThe lackluster debut of $12.1 million in China in March. (Some of Hollywood’s top earners in 2022 like Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick and Marvel Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness were denied by Beijing regulators for political reasons.)

Domination is struggling with a much more depressed Chinese film market than when fallen kingdom play. Although many urban centers, including Shanghai, are emerging from recent and economically damaging COVID-19 shutdowns, around 23% of cinemas across the country remain closed as a public health precaution and consumer activity continues to be suppressed.
