'Very difficult situation': Actor Rebel Wilson reacts to 'exit' controversy

Actor Rebel Wilson recently introduced his girlfriend Ramona Agruma on social media.

Actor Rebel Wilson has said an Australian newspaper has put her in a “very difficult situation” after fans accused the publication of pressuring her to reveal her relationship with a woman.

The ‘Pitch Perfect’ actor posted a selfie with his ‘Disney Princess’ partner on Instagram on Friday, a day before the Sydney Morning Herald reported he knew about the relationship and gave Wilson two days to comment.

On social media, LGBTQIA+ activists and others accused the newspaper of forcing Wilson – who had not publicly disclosed his sexuality – to come out.

The Herald denied pressuring Wilson and said he “just asked questions”.

In his first comments on the controversy, Wilson responded to a Twitter user on Sunday who accused the Herald of giving two days notice that they would be releasing the actor.

“It was a very difficult situation but I was trying to handle it with grace,” Wilson tweeted.

According to the newspaper, his gossip columnist had asked Wilson about his relationship “with great caution and respect.”

“Big mistake. Wilson chose to contemplate history, posting his new ‘Disney Princess’ on Instagram early Friday morning,” columnist Andrew Hornery wrote in a post on Saturday.

As outrage grew on social media, Herald editor Bevan Shields defended the column.

“We would have asked the same questions if Wilson’s new partner had been a man,” Shields wrote.

It wasn’t Wilson’s first time sparring with the Australian media – in 2017, she received a record A$4.7 million ($3.3 million) payout in defamation for a series of articles claiming she lied about her name, age and childhood to get ahead in Hollywood.

After the magazine’s publisher successfully appealed, Wilson’s price was revised to AU$600,000.
