Rory McIlroy picked up his 21st PGA Tour victory on Sunday with victory at the RBC Canadian Open.

McIlroy closed out the win with an 8 under 62 to beat Justin Thomas and Tony Finau. This is the second time in a row that he has won the event. He won it in 2019 and the tournament was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

McIlroy’s win came amid controversy surrounding PGA Tour players who defected to LIV Golf. As one of the faces of the PGA Tour, McIlroy’s victory made a huge statement and threw shade at LIV Golf Commissioner Greg Norman.

Norman told the Washington Post that McIlroy was “brainwashed” by the PGA Tour. McIlroy responded with victory at St. George’s, passing Norman on the PGA Tour’s all-time winning list.

“It’s a day I will remember for a long time. Twenty-one PGA Tour wins, one more than anyone else,” he said shortly after the win.

“I had extra motivation for what was happening across the pond. The guy running this tour has 20 PGA Tour wins and I was tied with him and wanted to get one ahead of him. him. And I did. So that was really cool for me, just a little bit of pride for that one,” he continued at the post-round press conference.

McIlroy finished the weekend with a par of 19 under.

“I feel like it’s getting harder and harder to win on the PGA Tour. Just look at the two guys I played with today. I came out with a lead and I had to shoot 8 under par to get the job done. So the depth of talent on this tour is really, really impressive. And going up against guys like JT and Tony and getting to the top is something to feel really good about” , said McIlroy.
