Korean boy band BTS celebrated their ninth anniversary with a shocking announcement that the group is on hiatus.

RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook announced the news during “Festa,” their annual live-streamed anniversary event. The K-pop sensations said they decided to take this time off to pursue solo projects and “learn how to be one again.”

The band thanked their fans and urged them to consider this a necessary step for the band, “I hope you don’t see this as a negative thing and see it as a healthy plan,” J- Hope. “I think BTS will get stronger this way.”

Along with discussing their future individual ventures — things are already in the works for J-Hope, Suga, and Jungkook — they reflected on their many accomplishments.

The trademark genius of K-pop group BTS

Ever since BTS burst onto the scene in 2013, they’ve been a force. To say the group succeeded would be an understatement: in 2019, BTS were the first group since the Beatles to have three No. 1 hits in one year on Billboard’s Top 200. They sold out 90,000 Wembley Stadium in London in 90 minutes. Three years ago, ticket sales for their tour sent Ticketmaster’s website plummeting, with an average ticket price of $452. BTS doesn’t just have fans, they have an army – which coincidentally calls themselves.

News of the breakup is obviously devastating to their followers, especially those who remember other famous boy band breaks. One Direction went on indefinite hiatus in January 2016 and have yet to be reunited. NSYNC has been technically on hiatus since 2002, and the band members are having a blast. said they didn’t break up seven years ago, but haven’t released any new music since.

But there is hope: just look at the big comeback of Big Time Rush, the recent Jonas Brothers world tour, the rebound of Fall Out Boy and more.

The group’s future is still unknown, but Suga made one thing clear: “It’s not like we’re breaking up!”
