Amber Heard Admits She and Depp Might Look Like “Hollywood Kids”

Amber Heard has given her first interview since losing her multi-million dollar libel battle against ex-husband Johnny Depp.

After sitting down with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie last week, segments were previewed on the Today show with the full interview scheduled for 8 p.m. EST on June 17.

Heard says she will stand by her testimony at trial ‘until the day I die’, but with the trial unfolding on social media, she thinks even the best-intentioned juror would have had a hard time avoiding her .

Describing the trial as “humiliating” and that she felt “less than human”, Heard admits that she did not feel confident before the verdict, but maintains that she “spoke truth to power” and in paid the price. She acknowledged that she and Depp looked like spoiled “Hollywood brats” to the average person, but maintains her case was about free speech.

Guthrie challenged Heard over her own actions in the relationship and she admitted to doing and saying “horrible and regrettable things”, but said she “always spoke the truth”.

Depp sued Heard for $50 million for implying he abused her in a Washington Post op-ed. She filed a counterclaim for $100 million, accusing him of waging a “smear campaign” against her.

Heard felt ‘less than human’ during the trial and was in a ‘very beautiful’ relationship

“Every day I would pass, three, four, sometimes six blocks, blocks with people holding signs saying ‘burn the witch’, ‘death to Amber’. After three and a half weeks, I spoke up and just saw a courtroom full of Captain Jack Sparrow fans, who were vocal and energetic,” Ms Heard said.

“Can you put into words what you felt?” asked Mrs. Guthrie.

“It is the most humiliating and horrible thing I have ever experienced. I have never felt more removed from my own humanity,” Ms Heard said. “I felt less than human.”

What lawyers say about Amber Heard’s appeal options

After Johnny Depp largely prevailed in his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard, his lawyer Elaine Bredehoft announced that her client “absolutely” intends to appeal.

The jury of five men and two women announced on Wednesday June 1 that they had concluded that Ms Heard had defamed Mr Depp on three statements. Jurors also found that Ms Heard had been defamed by one of three statements in her countersuit.

The Independent spoke to three lawyers about Ms Heard’s possible grounds for appeal, or even a new trial: Lisa Bloom of The Bloom Firm, whose clients included Janice Dickinson, Mischa Barton and several victims of Jeffrey Epstein; Jesse Weber, host and attorney for the Law & Crime Network, who covered the trial from the courthouse in Fairfax, Va.; and Mitra Ahouraian, a Beverly Hills entertainment attorney who represents actors, directors, producers and musicians.

Each counts the Depp-Heard jurors considered

As a public figure, Johnny Depp faced a high bar to win his libel case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. According to seven unanimous jurors, he cleared him.

Depp said his ex-wife defamed him in a 2018 newspaper editorial in which she alluded to abuse allegations against Depp. His name was never mentioned.

On Wednesday, the Virginia civil jury ruled in favor of Depp on all three counts, finding that Heard not only made false and defamatory statements, but that she did so with “actual malice” – a higher threshold for cases involving public figures. The jurors concluded that Depp should receive more than $10 million.

Depp’s victory was not absolute, however. The jurors also found that part of Heard’s counterclaim was valid. They dismissed two of Heard’s three counts, but found she had been defamed by a lawyer for Depp who accused her of trashing their apartment to make her look worse to police. The jury awarded him $2 million.

A look at each count considered by jurors:
