The America’s Got Talent the judges are notorious for their pranks, including last season when Simon Cowell pretended to be fatally struck in the chest with an arrow and nearly scared his co-star Sofia Vergara to death in the process. But this week it was a contestant who did the prank – and it was an expert prank, as it turned out that this particular ‘contestant’ had a lot of experience on the AGT Position.
Tuesday, about halfway through America’s Got Talent The third episode of Season 17 auditions, creepy cosplayers/TikTok challengers Monique and Stefani – collectively known as Duo Rag Dolls – jumped on stage looking like Melanie Martinez’s ugly stepsisters or The night before Christmas‘s Sally, with their Harajuku Girl, Crystal Methyd-de-drag race clown paint, pastel Sia wigs, giant Hello Kitty hair bows and Kardashian-esque vocal fries. The self-proclaimed “ultimate influencers” drawled, “What we do is creatively beautiful and extremely unique” and “Broadway-like,” and they certainly piqued the judges’ interest. But when they started brooding aimlessly over the AGT scene to Britney Spears’ “Toxic” with their giant lollipops and human-sized Care Bears, none of their seemingly unrehearsed acts were very influential or beautiful, and so they received four red Xs and several rounds of boos from the audience.
“Whether somebody would have shown up to rehearsals last night, that would have been so much better,” Stefani grumbled passive-aggressively, throwing her lavender-wigged best friend under the proverbial bus. “You’re not going, like, blame me right now,” Monique replied, though she admitted she was “a bit off” during the Duo Rag Dolls childish routine. “You were terrible. You were absolutely terrible,” Stefani shot back, at which point Stefani and Monique started rocking like, well, rag dolls. And this was when their shtick became entertaining.
As the wigs literally flew and the girls fell into the audience, slamming into Simon’s judge’s desk and setting off his red buzzer repeatedly, one of them met Simon’s confused gaze and barked: “Was it extreme enough for you?” And that’s when Simon recognized that the Duo Rag Dolls were – in a big reveal worthy of The Masked Singer– ancient AGT: Extreme judge/professional wrestler Nikki Bella and her twin sister, WWE wrestler Brie Bella.
“You two are very mean,” Simon chuckled, changing his “no” to “yes.” It’s a shame this is just one big prank: I mean, what drunken Las Vegas tourist wouldn’t want to see the badass Bella Twins, dressed as Bratz dolls, beating each other to pastel pink pulp? This was a million dollar act!
Well, Duo Rag Dolls won’t move on to the next round, obviously, but there was an even scarier living doll that will: ten-year-old British singer Harper Akudama, who looked like an angel until she opens its mouth and roars the awesome and fearsome voice of a monster (or Cookie Monster). “It was awesome. It was like a mouse turning into a vampire bat,” marveled Simon, who is apparently a hidden metal fan.
So Harper made the next round, alongside other young talent like 18-year-old Australian contemporary dancer Max Ostler (who Simon called “Harry’s dance styles”) and 13-year-old Eurovision Junior/The Voice Poland former student Sara James, who won Simon’s Golden Buzzer. That leaves just two Golden Buzzers – Heidi and Sofia – in play, so tune in next Tuesday to see more auditions and to see if any other mystery celebrities show up in Raggedy Annie disguise.
