‘Wonder Man’ series in the works for Marvel, Disney+ – The Hollywood Reporter

Wonder Man is the latest Marvel superhero to get the screen treatment.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has teamed up with Andrew Guest, writer-producer of comedies such as Brooklyn nine-nine and Community, to tackle a live-action series featuring the long-running Marvel character.

Guest will serve as the series’ head writer, while Cretton will produce and eventually direct one or more episodes. Cretton is working through his overall deal with Marvel Studios, signed late last year in light of Shang Chiis success.

Development for what is titled amazing man is in its early stages, but if things crack, the cameras could roll in 2023.

Wonder Man is one of Marvel’s oldest characters, first introduced in 1964 in the pages of avengers No 9. He was initially a villain and only appeared sporadically during the early Marvel era, until he was reimagined as a hero (and Avenger) in the late 1970s.

In the 1980s, the character took on its full meaning. Known as Simon Williams, he was a founding member of the Los Angeles-based West Coast Avengers and, with a look that included a turtleneck, red jacket and sunglasses, rose to stardom through his work as a day as an actor and stuntman.

The character has also developed close ties to classic (and now, thanks to Marvel movies and an Emmy-winning series, world famous) characters Vision and Wanda/Scarlet Witch. Stories linked him to the android via ion energy and brainwaves that implied the two were related to brothers. Wonder Man even developed feelings for Wanda, after Vision was disbanded.

The character’s takes on the Disney+ series have not been revealed. Marvel could steer the character down a Hollywood route, so far unexplored in the MCU, or it could set him down the Wanda-Vision route, something the company has continued to explore even with its latest blockbuster. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There is even a Wanda Vision spin-off show in development featuring Agatha Harkness, the villainess played by Kathryn Hahn.

Marvel has been consistently prolific with its Disney+ series since launching with Wanda Vision in early 2021. Recently finished streaming Moon Knight is now in Emmy Award campaign mode, while Ms. Marvel is in the middle of its run and is generating some of the best reviews of any Marvel show to date. She-Hulk: Lawyer is expected to strike in August, while the Samuel L. Jackson-let Secret Invasion and Ironheart are on deck after that.

Half a dozen shows are in development beyond that, including a second season of Loki and a new one daredevil series.

In addition to working on Wonder Man, Cretton is developing a sequel to Shang Chi and will direct and executive produce a series adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel chinese born american for Disney+.

The guest cut is his comedy teeth – his credits include shows such as 30 Rock and Marry me – but he comes with Marvel experience: he was a consulting producer on Hawk Eyethe headlining series from Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld that was known for its fun, light-hearted take on heroism and sidekicks.

Cretton is replaced by WME and Goodman Genow. Guest is replaced by UTA, Mosaic and McKuin Frankel.
