Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox receives an honorary Oscar.
The award, which will be presented to Fox on June 15, 2022, will honor the 61-year-old actor for his tireless efforts in the fight against Parkinson’s disease, which he has battled since 1991.
“Michael J. Fox’s tireless advocacy for Parkinson’s disease research and his boundless optimism illustrate the impact of one person on the future of millions of people,” said the President of the Academy, David Rubin.
Fox is best known for the role of Marty McFly in the hit family sci-fi film, Back to the Future. However, he is also known for his portrayal of attorney Louis Canning on the hit CBS drama The Good Wife.
Additionally, Fox made a memorable appearance in Scrubs.
Of course, Fox is no stranger to awards, with five Emmys, four Golden Globes, a Grammy, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and a People’s Choice Award already under its belt. Additionally, he won GQ’s Man of the Year award.
The Honorary Oscar is awarded “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, outstanding contributions to the state of the motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy”. And in Fox’s case, to honor his work in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1999 and went public with his diagnosis in 1998. He then established the Michael J Fox Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
The foundation itself drives progress in the field by funding promising research, accelerating the pipeline from scientific studies to pharmaceutical treatments.
