Johnny Depp’s rep comments on rumors the actor is returning to Pirates of the Caribbean

Johnny Depp won’t be returning to Disney Pirates of the Caribbean series, a rep for the actor said.

On Monday, June 27, rumors swirled that Depp was set to reprise the role of Captain Jack Sparrow after Australian outlet poptopic reported a rumored deal that would see the actor return to the franchise for around $300m (£245m).

“It’s made up,” a rep for the actor told NBC News (via E ! New).

The possibility of Depp returning to the franchise was the subject of testimony in a defamation lawsuit between the actor and Amber Heard, his ex-wife. The trial ended earlier this month (June 2022).

Depp was asked, “If Disney came at you with $300 million and a million alpacas, would there be anything in the world that would make you go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean movie?”

“That’s right,” Depp replied.

Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow in five films, including 2017 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. two additional pirate movies are currently in the works and many of the star’s fans would love to see him return. An online petition calling on him to return to his role has 800,000 signatures.

Earlier this month, a jury found that Amber Heard defamed Depp in a Washington Post editorial in 2018 and awarded him $10m (£8m) in compensatory damages and $5m (£4m) in punitive damages. Heard was awarded $2m (£1.6m) in compensatory damages, but no punitive damages.

Heard’s attorney said the actor plans to appeal.
